That bit of info makes me feel even MORE lucky to have made it through, and a little more dumb for having attempted it. I saw the signs, but no horns were sounding. Definitely would NOT have tried it if they were. The river guide book says the recommended portage route is on the right side, by the old mill ruins. We portaged her kayak on the left side, which was a fairly good distance, and the left side is where I went down the rapids. I knew not to attempt running through the old mill ruins, that may have had a different outcome. I lived in Columbia the first few years of my life, but I'd never been on any water around there. Lower Saluda made a believer out of me! Good info on Blewitt Falls. Thanks for the info. I did some recon of that stretch of river, using google earth. It has a feature that shows the elevation of the terrain. I noticed that there is no more than a 1 foot change on all the rapids and shelfs on the PeeDee River. In contrast, the Lower Saluda at Mill Race drops about 11 feet in that very short distance.
