Like the subject line says, my trolling motor is locked up and I'm not sure what to do. More specifically, I turn it on and I can hear it making the same hum it makes when it WAS running good except the prop just sits there. It's a hand-me-down that I didn't pay for so I'm not out anything, but I'd like to avoid paying for a new one if at all possible. I'm sure there is some vital detail I left out, but if you've dealt with this before, or have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.

I had this happen to an old trolling motor... and I mean OLD. There was a set of gears at the bottom of the shaft that had slipped out of the gear that turned the prop.. I actually had to take it to a repair shop to get it fixed.

The guy owed me a favor, so I didn't have to pay... but I would call around and see what they say and get an estimate - it might be cheaper in the long run to just buy a new motor

Take the prop off and make sure the shear pin hasn't bent. Have seen cases where the trolling motor got hit hard on a stump or something and bent the pin and caused the same thing to happen. I guess the pin bends so much that it puts the prop in a bind and won't allow it to turn. Might get lucky and it be that simple. You can buy replacement shear pins at Walmart.

Same thing happen to mine. The commutator ring had slid forward on the armature shaft and locked up on the brushes.I have a link below in my signature.Still looking for another armature.Minn Kota no longer makes them.

Mine did the same after many years of use. Best thing I did was spray brake cleaner on the copper brushes and let all the crap flush out. Worked perfect and still works perfect.
