I had to get pool supplies this morning, the place dont open till 10am so I hit my favoriate pickeral place and on the first cast felt that thump, set the hook and "Game On" it took line out made a jump, no pickeral, it was a huge bass  , it ran to my left made another jump, got it under control, ran to my right made another jump and started running towards a set of lilly pads, it was slowing down now, it was all mine. I was standing on a little floating dock which was anchored with thick reenforcment rods, it made another run out than came back and wrapped around one of those rods(twice), well I was on my knees looking at this beast(6" down), the only option I had was to belly it, I tried to scoop it but broke the line when it felt me. :( . You see I was using Trilene XL, 6LB, test, Heres the sad part the weapon of choice was JDBaits 5" stick bait Watermelon red/flake(Mr. Softee), Sorry Denny :( it would have looked nice on your site. I'm going to guestimate and I'm on the skinny side that it had to be an easy 6 1/2 lb. I still have a queezy feeling in my stomach.

NO NO NO!Gotta tell it right. :---)

Awww man that was the biggest fish I ever saw.It must have been 15 to 20 pounds. It almost dislocated my shoulder when it jumped.Man that was the biggest bass I've ever saw.

:LOL2: :LOL22: :LMFAO:

I hate it when they wrap around stuff... but on the bright side, at least you got your blood to pumping this morning. :D

That would be the main reason that I don't use any line smaller than 15#.... on anything!

Luckily, I have never lost a fish over 2 pounds. I would probably drive myself nuts if a lost a big one.

Had my heart thumpin' while I read your post Moo!!! And sorry to hear about your loss, but why didnt you just jump in after the thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought bout trying to lip it but its mouth was closed and had a hook in it somewhere, best thing I thought was to belly land it, no matter what I would have done the line would have broke, I've come to grips with the fact the thing out smarted me :(

That sort of crap happens all the time. Especially when its a fish you know is big. Usually if they are that close, I will go swiming for it. At least you now know that big bass is there now for next time you fish that venue.

Actually, yes. I cannot remember a time I have ever broken a fish off, while bass fishing at least. I have broken off a few while bream fishing, but I attribute that to 10 year old 6 pound line, and constant pulling through brush. I have never had a fish come unbuttoned that was of any size, because I almost always loose them at the boat. The only time I might have had a biggun was if I missed a hookset, but I don't consider that a lost fish, because he never was hooked, and could have been nosing the bait, not inhaling it.

Actually, I do remember one good fish I lost. I had been pier fishing all morning at the beach once, and was catching 12 inch sand sharks all morning. Something like 30 of them in a couple hours. At one point, my drag started screaming, and the rod butt started bouncing (rod was leaning on railing). As I grabbed the rod, the line broke. 30 minutes later, the same thing happened, but I landed it. It turned out to be a 32 or so inch hammerhead. Presumably it was the same shark I had lost before, and was the biggest fish caught off that pier in a while, so I quickly forgot about loosing the one before.
