Well I went and looked at this little jewel (diamond in the rough? LOL) on Sunday. It belongs to a buddy of mine he wants my 4 wheeler I want his boat and some $$$. It ran when he parked it but that has been nearly 10 years ago. After a little research on the motor I feel confident that I can make this deal happen and come out OK. Its a 1974 Ouachita 1848 flat bottom jon with a 1976 Merc 500 50hp and a jet unit w tiller steer. Yes it needs some serious TLC and elbow grease but I feel like the motor isn't that far out from running and all the boat really needs is the transom replaced and a good bath. I'm going to call him tomorrow and lay my offer out there and then we shall see what happens. Here are some pics and let me know what ya think.

If the price is right I say go for it. That's cool to see the original paint & logo on an Ouchita since I have 14ft 77' that had been beat up & painted over many times by the time i bought it. I'm not so sure about the motor but I dig the boat. From what I can see it looks like it's in pretty darn good shape especially being over 30 years old. If the hull looks is in as good of shape as the rest of the boat looks to be you should be in business. A jon boat that big would allow you to do all sorts of cools mods. A good scrubbing and a fresh coat of paint and it'll probably look as good as new.

I would be tempted. An 18' Jon is really cool.

I'm sure the biggest work would be getting the motor up to par. Even if it started right up, you know the water pump is gonna need to be rebuilt and you should definitly check all the fuel hoses. Also who knows, sitting right there, if some critters didnt get into that thing one winter.

Under the cowling was pretty clean other than some spiders and lots of cob webs. Some of the wiring needs some attention but nothing that scared me.

Looking at the pics it seems to be in fairly good shape! :) . The trailer looks as though you're gonna have to apply some elbow grease into getting it back in shape, and you may need some new tires. Other than that.............Nice rig! 8)

Be sure to look the motor over good, in the event it'd froze & wasn't winterized. Looks like it'd make a nice project if you get it.

Good Luck!

Good grief, I was supposed to go pick it up today, he couldn't get away, its at his dad's about 30 minutes from here, maybe sometime this week I'll get my new to me boat. #-o

ITS HOME!!!! =D> Had to load it on my 16' flatbed with a tractor and forks but its here safe and sound. Got it in the shop looks rough (nasty) but after a good cleaning and a new transom I think it'll be A-Ok. I pooped more details and new pics tomorrow.
