I am doing my carpet over in my basstracker. I have plywood decks that I am replacing with new, and have read on this site about sealing with resin or a good sealer. Could I just paint it instead? Seems to me it would seal it up as well as some of those wood sealers do and would last longer. I was planning on ordering 20 oz carpet from Basspro but after reading reviews about bad fraying of ends I'm having second thoughts. I have looked elsewere on the net for carpet but they all look the same to me. Any suggestions? The boat manufacturer glued only the ends of the carpet to the underside of the plywood and screwed the deck down through the carpet. I plan on glueing the entire board but am unsure if I should put screws through the carpet or screw the deck down first then carpet over and just cut it at the sides? I have seen indoor/outdoor glue for $14/gallon at home improvement stores and "marine" glue on the net for $40/gallon. Any real difference b/w the two? This is a great site and I have learned a bunch already. Thanks to those who contribute!!!!!!!

Here is my boat I did...........I used Ace's Outdoor carpet glue. I ended up using a little over a gallon for the entire boat.
My carpet is Cabela's Premier Marine Carpet in Sapphire and Charcoal. I had to cut a little more than a 1/4 inch off all my decking to make room for the carpet because it was so thick.........I had a 1989 Sea Ray 160 that I sold in 2006 and it still looked brand new. I always kept the boat covered and or in the garage. I used Thompson's Water Seal on my deck before I put carpet over it and I coated both the top and bottom, sides, edges and any holes I had in the decking. If the Thompson's isn't exposed to the sun, it will last a very long time as well as the carpet if you take care of it..... #-o

I used the Cabelas deluxe carpet as well on both my builds in my signature.

I really like the carpet. It was about $15-20/yard. I tried a bunch of different glues between both builds(spray, contact cement) but the best was outdoor carpet glue applied with a notched trowel. I would also carpet everything outside the boat then screw it down. That way you don't have to worry about seperation or it peeling up. I dry fit everything by just stapling the carpet down a and fitting it before glueing the carpet down. The key is a sharp utility knife. I also used a Black and Decker Electric scissors which worked pretty well.

as far as the glue goes, I used the indoor/outdoor from the lowes store, and realizing I made a terrible decision on the "fake turf" carpet ripped it back out. The glue holds very good and seems to be quite chemical resistant "cause I cant get the crap off of the aluminum". If is is sticking that well to aluminum with no cleaning or prep it should do great on the wood. Best of luck

Are you set on carpet, cause i used nautalex marine vinyl.I think it looks better than carpet, its just as easy to install, wont hold water or rot,and it cost less considering it's 80" wide at 19.99 a yard. I got mine from a website called "your auto trim".Great site they have just about any material you could need, camo, marine carpet, clear vinyl. It's a great site and the prices are more than fair.DSCN1682.JPG
