Hey guys, new to the forum and could use some help.

Last fall while my dad and I were out duck hunting, we were on the way back to the ramp when the motor started to rev up. The motor is a 35hp Mercury 2 cycle w/ electric start and console steering. My dad tried to shut it off with the key but it would not shut off so I believe he had to pull the gas line to kill it. We were unable to get it started again so we had to get towed in by a friend. I know we burned the starter trying to get it going again but after that I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions? I'm worried it might have been some weeds covering the water intake causing something to overheat. Also, when I bought it in 2010, it looked like the wire harness around the rectifier and starter solenoid had melted some so I have ordered those parts to fix that as well. It's coming out of storage tomorrow and I'm not the best with motors but I ordered a manual for it which is pretty easy to follow. I can post some pics once I pick it up. Any help is appreciated.
