I just rebuilt a 1962 15 hp Sea King. Never owned a 2 stroke motor before this. I got her to run and she runs great. When testing in a barrel, I notice oil begins to pool up after idling for 5-10 minutes. After 10 minutes or so I may have around 1/4-1/2 ounce of oil floating in barrel. Is this normal for an old motor like this? Im thinking 25:1 that oil has got to go somewhere. I know running in a barrel isn't the best thing but my muffs wont work for this outboard. I swirl a rag around the water and it soaks up the oil pretty fast, this way oil doesn't make its way through the cooling passages.

This is completely normal for a 2 stroke especially when just idling in a barrel. My 15hp and 30hp 2 strokes do the same thing when running in a barrel. Obviously though if it is too much then you have a problem. But you are running 25:1 so there is going to be more oil. I don't know the 60's models well so I don't know how much exhaust oil is left from running them in a barrel. This is why all the manufacturers have went to 4 strokes, to help keep the waterways cleaner.

As said, you're going to see some oil on the water when running in a barrel but ½ oz. in 10 minutes seems a bit excessive to me. But I'm also not use to running one on 25:1 either. If you're not seeing any water in your lower unit oil and you're not having problems with the oil level dropping in it then I'd say just keep on running it.

Sounds normal for an old(er) engine. Some models are much worse than others. I have a couple of 7.5s and a 5.5 from 55 to 57, none of those three are bad at all, I have a couple of 10's, both early 60's and both are terrible (all these are Johnson's mixed at 16.1 or 24.1). I think on the older motors, the bigger they are the worse they are. I have a 2002 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke that is not bad at all.
