oh wow so cool !!
I had an uncle in Orlando, FL that was a world class taxidermist.
As a kid, my brothers and I spent countless hours in his shop watching
him do his work. It was so interesting watching an "old school master"
at work. But, back in the '60s, it was normal. Before the foam bodies.
When I was in the Navy stationed in Italy, I found a paperback book
of Taxidermy by Leon Pray . . . this sparked my desire to try it for myself.
I killed a pigeon with a slingshot and mounted it..... then, a few other small
birds and animals. I bought fresh fish at the market and mounted them. Of course,
eating what wasn't mounted. This honed my air brushing skills like you wouldn't believe.
Transferring to Virginia, I progressed up to larger fish out of the Chesapeake Bay,
deer and hog heads, even a Black Angus cow head that was a family pet that had died.
Taxidermy is an ART - a craft.
If anyone ever wanted to learn a personally rewarding skill that takes very little
monetary investment to get started, this would be it. There are so many good books
and videos on the market today, plus the good old YouTube.
And, I am quite sure that Taxidermy Insider can get you started !!!

Thank you for the welcome. I enjoyed reading about your history in taxidermy Barefoot. What was your uncle's shop name ? I am always interested in taxidermy history. Good to hear you mention Leon Pray....one of the founders of modern taxidermy. His sketches are legendary in the taxidermy business and are still referenced today. Many of his sketches appeared in Modern Taxidermist magazine, another taxidermy classic by the great Joe Bruchac. We have a treasure trove of then from when we started in the 70's . Love that Marlin mount from the seventies !

Aaron, if you google up L.H. Weise, that is my uncle.
He had a studio in Orlando for many years then moved to
S.W. Georgia to retire. He is about 88 years old now.
His son, Roy, operates a studio in Georgia as well.

Hurricane Charley in 2004 so I don't have too many photos to share.

oh, my uncle LH's most challenging accomplishment was when he mounted
six (6) Clydesdale horses for the Anheuser-Busch museum in Tampa, FL.

What is the difference between the Tax Collector and a Taxidermist ?
The taxidermist always leaves the hide. (corny, I know. But always funny when he said it).


oh, back to the white marlin I mounted - - - my neighbor wanted to put it on the wall
in his den. As you know, most billfish are mounted just plain straight. Well, my neighbor's
den was not wide enough for an 8 foot mount, LOL, so we devised the plan to bend it to fit.
The other one is straight that belongs to his son.

Interesting information about your Uncle. Mounting six Clydesdales is a huge undertaking.... It must be an impressive display !
I like the story behind the marlin.Whatever it takes to make the client happy !!
