Russ I know you picked up one of the new HD units from Lowrance.
Do you have Gps on it ?
if so What if any package did you get?
I am looking at them and will be placing the order soon
these seem to be the options I can get..
Fantastic New High-Definition Charting
New Insight USA™, Lake Insight™ and Nautic Insight™ revolutionize electronic charting in detail and resolution (Americas) *
Expanded Basemap Marine Detail (Americas) *
Navionics® World Background map (non-Americas)
Expanded Charting Options include Navionics® Platinum+, Platinum and HotMaps Platinum with TurboView™
Navionics® support now available as a software update.

Thanks Wayne

Unless he has gotten an update package since I last talked with him, he didn't get the GPS, seeing as they won't have many of the smaller electric only waters he fishes mapped.

I'm curious though, what made you pick the Lowrance over the Humminbird side imaging? I am starting to look around at which one I would want on the 20 footer when I build it.

I have had lowrance units on my last 3 boats and love them. the down scan looks awesome . the hummingbird transducer is huge and at $400 is a bit pricey to mount on the trolling motor and risk being knocked off or damaged the pictures of the lowrance ducer look much more streamlined..

Can you put a Side Imaging (or whatever Lowrance calls it) on a trolling motor? Russ was telling me that when he was at BPS looking to buy his, the sales guy recommended not putting it on the T motor, as when you steered with the trolling motor, it would distort everything and screw the image up.

I hadn't given it much thought but that makes sense.

Lowrance is advertising a trolling motor mount I am sure it will distort the image but if you are looking for a certain piece of structure you need to be moving in a staight line.
I ordered the hds-7 to mount on the front deck. I will upgrade to the side scan when it comes out and we will see.

man I'm sorry I missed this post.. I have been gone for over a week on military training in Alabama...

I got the HDS-5x - no GPS. Like bassboy said, the lakes I fish aren't on there, so I am looking at handhelds, and I'm using Brine's right now to get the hang of it.

I've been reading up on the Lowrance imaging, and it will work too. If you haven't looked at it much, this is how it works.

You use a regular transducer on the trolling motor (go ahead and order one from https://lei-extras.com). It works much better than the transom mount in my opinion.
The kit that comes with the side imaging has another unit that you will network into with your HDS7. The receiver for the kit also goes into that network pod, and it will most likely have to be mounted on the transom of your boat even though you can use only that and buy the trolling motor adapter, but I don't know how well it would read - couldn't be that bad though.

I'm going to wait until more detail is out on it before I do anything...
