I've been getting my boat ready for new paint and while priming I noticed there is a crack in the rub rail near the back of the boat. I guess I don't even really understand how this could crack could have happened in the first place. Do I need to get this welded or or can I just use JB Weld or something similar, Alumaloy or whatever? I will try to post a pic when I get home tonight if that will help.

It could have cracked from impact or that may be a flex point in your hull.

If it is from impact, JB Weld should work just fine. If your hull is flexing there, I would want it welded up.
