I have a neighbor that let her Husqvarna with less than 50 hours on it sit outside for two years. I have it here and got it running but still have a lot of maintenance to do on it. When I loaded it on my trailer I saw big flakes of rust come from the deck. So one of the things I’m going to do is pull the deck remove the blades and pressure wash then use either a wire wheel or flap disk to knock off the rust that I can. Wash it again and let dry then apply Rustoleum rust converter two coats. It’ll turn the rust black. Then I’ll use Stops rust primer and top coat with Rust stop enamel paint.
I’ve done this on a number of things and it’s always worked.

When I found rust and blisters on my SxS bed, I wire brushed all the rust and loose stuff, treated with rustoleum rust stop, the sprayed bed liner over that. Been three years with no additional signs of rust..
Could I know where did you get your product please I would like to try it too

Big box stores or HarborFreight has their brand and Rustoleum.
Remember to prime over it before painting.
Depends on the " product you use". On the rust stop product I used, no primer...clean and remove as much rust as possible, then spray on the rust stop and let it do its work. Afterbthe recomended number of days add the finnish coating. On my machine I went with the sprayon bed liner material, excellent results... I haul a large chemical boom sprayer in my machine, the chemicals speeded up the rust issue, but since coating the rust about three years back, all is still good..

I thought about using bed liner for this deck but was afraid the finish may help grass stick. I bought the Rustoleum Rust Reformer today and noticed it was a primer also. I have some Rustoleum Stops Rust Black enamel to top coat it. After everything completely cures I’ll try ceramic coating it. Saw it on YouTube so it has to work. 😂

I have used a phosphoric acid product. It turns iron oxide to iron phosphate. Maybe thats what some of the commercial products are..
It will hold paint..

I still use Ospho after 25+ years, use a cheap paint brush and oil based paint for finish. My first coat of paint I mix a little paint thinner in the oil base paint so it flows into tight places instead of just making a paint bubble that captures moisture later on. Then do a second coat of paint no thinner. Give everything plenty of time to dry for the best results.

Yes, pretty sure that's correct. They all seem to contain phosphoric acid. I have several kinds, but Xtend is my fave for ease of application, cost, and availability. Some of the products must be washed off thoroughly and neutralized with baking soda.

Hi,

"I myself have considered using a rust converter for my boat trailer. However, I first wanted to gather feedback from those who have already used it. If you have used a rust converter, could you share your experience? How did it work for you? Your advice would be greatly appreciated."

Knock off the flaky rust, spray with X-tend. Top coat anyway you want, if you want. If you don't want, then apply several coats of X-tend allowing each coat to dry before reapplying. I've yet to have anything treated with the stuff start rusting again. The only thing to be concerned with is fully coating the rust which won't happen if there is any scaly, flaky rust present.

Merci beaucoup!

Was looking at doing rust converter for my boat trailer. I'm going to wire it down but also wanted to try rust converter. Has anyone ever used this? How was it?
I use Ospho for rusted steel and iron. I let it sit for days outdoors after application with a brush. Wash with water hose and let air dry. Then I paint with oil based rut o leum thinned 10-15% with paint thinner. Give that a few days and follow up with just oil based paint and I have terrific results. The leftover Ospho lasts for years with infrequent use and I don't pour anything back into it.

Rustoleum rust converter has worked VERY well for me.

Use a chisel or scraper to knock off any scale, then wire wheel or just generously cover with rust converter. The rust won't come back unless you left some scale on there. It has to make contact with the rust in all areas to kill the rust.

I also recommend top-coating with Rustoleum Professional with a capful of Japan Dryer in it to speed up hardening of the paint.

I finished a mower deck a few weeks ago. Did top and underneath.
Wire wheels on a drill and some different size hand brushes to get everything. Let the converter cure for at least 24 hrs. Then Rustoleum primer and top coated underneath with black. After it cured a week I flipped it over and did the top side. This time since it’s a Husqvarna mower instead of using their paint that doesn’t hold up I found orange Allis Charmers orange tractor paint from Rustoleum. Match the mower pretty good. Turned out way stronger that the factory paint job. The rest of the mower will come apart before the deck rust out now.
I did it for a neighbor. She left a new 52” Husqvarna sit outside for 2 years without even started it. Called me and ask me to get it going. I think she’s going to give it to her daughter. So I’m making it new again. It’s taking me a while between all my other projects. But I saved the engine just need to reassemble and cleaning up the rest of the mower. All connectors and putting protectant etc. etc.
A lot of the same stuff I did on my boat rebuild. Lol

One other comment on rust converters. If I'm not mistaken you need some rust for it to work, so you don't want to clean it up too much. As said, get that scale off it will keep the converter from getting to all the rust.

Correct sir. It didn’t take me long at all to knock off the loose stuff with the wire brushes. I felt like I was being lazy not taking it down to bare metal.
