I kayak a fair amount. There is a reentry technique that some people use if their roll fails using a "paddle float". You can google up on paddle float rentry to get a sense of what is involved. Essentially an inflatable bag attached to your paddle serving as sponson. Seems you could use the same paddle float with a longer pole. You could even use an interlude as a float. Cheap and worth a shot...in the shallows first. The float is remarkably buoyant. I think it would be far superior to trying to pull up over the side. Though I agree that transom may be best - but I think I'd rather have some water over the side than swamp my engine first. Let us know what works out, this is interesting question.

Since I'm not as young and graceful as I used to be, it's a little harder to climb back in my boat when we're anchored up, swimming. With my jet boat, it's not a problem, as it has a boarding platform, and I've gotten used to having that luxury.

However, my other boat is an outboard, and I really don't feel comfortable using the engine cavitation plate as a step, and trying to climb in like that. So, I fabricated a small platform for the port side of the transom, and welded it in place.
This is the first summer I've used the platform, but it's working out pretty good for both me and my girlfriend. It's a LOT easier getting in and out of the boat.

I will take a picture of it tomorrow when I have daylight. 8)
