to cut or not to cut????

I recently purchaced a Tsunami 800GPH livewell pump. I also picked up a screen for it because I'm mounting it thru the hull. My question is do you guys just cut the excess threads off of it or not???? if not I'm afraid of breaking the extra 4" just sticking out off on something. Oh and what do you seal it up with? 5200? silicone?

Cut it off so that you have enough to put the screen on. Then take it all apart and use a liberal amount of 5200 on it, clean up the excess with mineral spirits. Does the screen thread on? I have seen some that just kinda have a rubber type friction fit, if so use some 4200 to keep it in place.

I cut the threads off i leave about an inch so i can screw on the screen
