LOCATION
Wisconsin
Hello people of the tinboats,
I just bought a cheap Fish finder and was looking for some input. I was going to transom mount it on my 16' Jon on the port. It says to mount it on the starboard side if your motor prop rotates clockwise which mine does. But I have a trolling motor on that side among other things that would get in the way.

I'm not sure I want to drill holes in the boat either. What if the mounting location didn't work too great? I would be screwed.

If I do screw the transducer mount in, will it be safe of no leaks? Seems kind of scary.

all you do is seal the holes with 5200 or marine epoxy once you find out it's the proper location. If you have to relocate it, you can throw some jb weld or bondo over the holes, and it'll be fine.

If your worried about making it permanant they sell a bracket that the transducer mounts to and it hangs over the transom. This way you can move it around to where the props wont effect it.

He'd probably be better off getting an inhull transducer if he's going to spring for a new one

On a jon boat I usually mount the transducer about 4" in from the end on either side of the boat and never had a problem and that was mainly on a 36" boat. All three brands I've used (A real cheap Humminbird, an Eagle GPS and a color Garmin). I like to mount mine on the opposite side I intend to drop the anchor from so I don't have to worry about hitting it pulling in the anchor. The reason I'd swap sides depended on the motor I was using, with a 15 HP Force I could leave the anchor hanging from the anchor lock, with the 20 HP Merc I couldn't without getting a good bath and had to store the anchor under the hatch on the opposite side of the boat.

super glue the transducer bracket to were you think you may want it and hit the water to see if the prop gives any interference

after i got on the water and saw everything was working properly w/ no interference i went home and bolted it up

just make sure not to drill you bolt holes any bigger than they need to be and dont be stingy with that sealer. i gob'd mine up, torqued the bolts and gob'd the sealer around the head of the bolts and nuts. hit a good stump the other weekend with the trans. and didnt faze it at all ( i thaught i was going to rip it clean out of the transom )
