I finally got half of my transom wood cut to size and shape...

I decided to go with 1" this Sapele wood. I think with several coats of spar urethane, it should look pretty good back there.

Should I use a foam brush, or regular bristle brush for applying the spar?

I used a regular brush and gave it 5 coats and a light sanding after every 2 coats. The edges got a total of 10 coats.
How thick was the old transom?

What grit of sand paper would you recommend?
I think I used 220 I'll have to check and let you know.

A regular brush will be fine, if you aren't in any rush then try putting coats on the flat horizontal surfaces. It sits better after a couple of coats it may run in areas if you don't. Of course you can sand out the runs pretty easy, just telling you my experience in case you have a little time to burn.

I am a little concerned about how close the holes got to the bottom of the wood....

Should I be concerned about it?
There is about a 1/4" room to spare, just looks like it could be a potential weak spot.

Don't know but it looks as though the previous transom holes held just fine.

Did you use the old transom as a template or did you put the new transom in the boat and drill?

Probably should have put the new transom in the boat then drilled the holes. Have you tried putting the new transom in the boat too see if the holes line up?

I actually just sucked it up and bought another piece... If I left that old one it would have eaten at my soul for an eternity...

So I got a new piece and didn't even use the old one... I measured twice, cut, measure again, drilled... lined up holes... measured again.

It came out perfect... totally glad I got a new piece.

Put my first coat of spar on this evening... cant wait to show it off once its done...
