Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

Update. about a week ago I heard Garmin bought Navionics. Lawsuit over. If it is true then expensing a matter of time before Garmin is back to having downward facing elements.

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

I did finally speak to Humminbird. The HELIX SI models with downscan have both a downward facing and side facing elements. Several weeks ago I did read that Humminbird paid Navico for the downscan patent rights. I tried to find the article to post a link but couldn't find it, sorry. Back in...

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

I spoke to Garmin yesterday. The rep read off the details of the transducer and confirmed the elements are side looking only and has no downward facing element and that it makes an image from the two side images to show what is under the boat. Not ideal. I'll be giving Humminbird a call...

    fish finder/GPS mounting system

I don't know about that system you mentioned, however, I have run a 12' jon for the past 10 years on all electrics. I installed a fish finder about 8 years ago and did drill holes in the transom - to this day I have not seen one drop of water come through the mount. Good luck.

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

I greatly appreciate the press release. Certainly need more research on the Garmin downward facing element. Bass Pro Shops staff told me that unless you buy Garmin with echomap, you won't see shorelines on the unit because it is not pre-loaded with aerial view and if using Quickdraw on the...

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

I'm currently evaluating the Garmin Striker 7SV vs the Humminbird Helix 7 G2. In Massachusetts there's so many small lakes that are not any Navionics / LakeMaster chips so I really want to create my own and only Garmin and Humminbird have this capability, so I'm told and have found to be true...

    Fish Scale?

I tried the Rapala Sportsmen's 50lb. digital scale. Well, at least that's the closest thing I could find to what I had. Then just a cheap Wal-Mart version of a needle scale. Wow! The boga-grips are expensive - start at $125. No doubt it's a life long buy. I was looking for something...

    Fish Scale?

Can anyone recommend a solid, durable, accurate fish scale which is worth it's money? Primary use will be for LMB. I have bought a couple, one digital, one not digital, and neither one was worth they money because neither lasted very long. Thanks!!

New to TinBoats - Trolling motor question

Yes, just loosen the one screw and spin the head. There is enough wire to pop the head off a little and have a look down the shaft so you can make sure you spin it I the direction that leaves a little slack in the wires. It's very simple.

New to TinBoats - Trolling motor question

I also have a 1236 jon boat. Unless you really have your heart set on a bigger boat, the 1236 is just fine for two. My outfit has two TM's and a depth finder. It fits two grown men and our gear just fine. I fish with 5 rods and two tackle boxes in the boat, my buddy has 2-3 rods and a good...

    Going electric

Definitely spend money on a good charger and follow the battery mfg recommendations for charging. I use a Shumacher Ship 'n Shore charger which is simply awesome - auto shut-off when the battery reaches 100%. With my old charger i forgot about it and burnt out two batteries!! I have a B&S...

12' Jon Boat Conversion - About to Start - seeking thoughts

I've had a 12' Tracker for a couple years and just got a B&S 5hp for it. I'm drafting plans to cut out the benches, add a floor, then a battery/seat box in the rear and the front. I've read on here not to use Pressure Treated lumber for a few different reasons. I was thinking use lighter...

    5hp Briggs & Stratt on 12' Jon

Thanks sixgun. Didn't think there was much else to do as it is only a 5hp. Thankfully, I really don't make long runs as most water bodies here in Eastern Mass. are small. Agreed, anything larger would exceed transom recommendations, and the cost to upgrade wouldn't be worth the extra speed on...

    5hp Briggs & Stratt on 12' Jon

I've got new 5hp B&S on a 12' Alum Tracker. I'm having trouble getting it to plane even if i distribute the weight around. It's my first boat & not sure if I need to adjust the angle of the motor, get a new prop, or put on a hydrofoil (which seems a bit much on just a 5hp). How fast should it...
