And... now it needs a new axel. I made the mistake of leaving the old grease on the spindles to protect them from the elements. When I cleaned them last night to put the new hubs on, both of them are worn out and I found significant gouging on one... At this point, I probably could have bought a decent used trailer for what I'm going to have into it.IMG_9324.jpeg

Yes, that happens just when you think you're out of the woods. However, you now have a great used trailer that you know all about. It won't be giving you any trouble I'll bet.
The real kicker is that it doesn't currently have a full axel. the spindles are welded into the C-channel cross member instead. Getting them out is going to be... interesting. If I use a torch, I'm going to wind up blowing out part of the C-channel but I'm not sure I want to using a cutting wheel either. The last thing I need is for that disk to come apart with me under it.

I need a better pic to see what needs to be done. Have you thought about installing a regular trailer axle or is that way too much money?

My memory sucks... the axle is a piece of upside down c-channel approx. 2"x3" with the spindles welded inside the channel. I don't have great photos. However, looking at the photos I do have, it doesn't appear to be tied to directly to the trailer frame (like I thought it was). If I can find an axle that fits, it shouldn't be too hard to swap them out.

I'm going to replace the axle either way. A new 2000lb axel runs about $200, give or take $50. Not cheap for me, but not unaffordable either.

There is way too much rust on what's left to get a good repair. New axle of new trailer? It's the question of the day.
The trailer frame was hot dipped and is actually still in good shape. Pretty much everything else is rusted to one degree or another. Once I put a new axle and winch on it, I’ll have basically a new trailer for the cost of a used one. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway lol.

At some point you have to quit throwing good money after bad though. If I find anything else that is more than $50 (ish) to fix, I’ll have to think real hard about looking for a better trailer.

New axle has been ordered. Naturally, the trailer has a weird spring spacing (47”) so I couldn’t just pick one up from TSC. I had to order a dedicated boat trailer axle online. Fortunately, the hubs I already have will fit.

Maybe it's rusted out and needs replaced anyway, but FWIW, the bearings don't spin on the spindle.

Only the inner bearing race rides on the spindle. It is not a bearing surface. It doesn't matter if it is rough or gouged. Just smooth it out the best you can with a file and/or abrasive cloth and oil. As long as the bearing race slides over the spindle, it should work OK.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV

The hubs won’t tighten up anymore. When I pulled the old hubs, the back bearings were just about seized up. I’m assuming they wore the back side of the spindle back, causing the issue.

I checked the new hubs against the old set. If anything, the new hubs are slightly longer (1/4” or less) than the old ones, so I don’t think the hubs are the issue
