    1997 Evinrude 115 misfiring

Lets start at the beginning. The only comment that caught my eye so far is the partial swamping. Exactly how high did the water get in the boat? May be a clue as to what is going on. Secondly, do you still have an active VRO system? If so then by all means the tank needs to be removed and...

    1973 johnson 65 hp powershift 2

Believe that was a pushbutton or electric shift. Look at the control box and count the number of control cables (not the harness) and if you have one it is electric and if two then it is mechanical shift.

Which OMC tank for my Johnson motor?

Any single line OMC fuel line fitting will work. There is no difference. They are all the same. Always buy quality!!! The single line metal tanks are vented even though the cap may not be. The vent plunger is at the mating surface between the tank fitting and fuel line fitting on the tank side.

Motor wouldn't go over 2400 RPM temporarily?

Your engine went in to S.L.O.W. (Speed limiting overheat warning). If you have an owners manual it is clearly outlined in it. Can be reset by turning off the key switch and back on again. If the issue still exists the engine will continue going in to SLOW until it is repaired. Pretty much...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

Those lower units are pretty bulletproof as far as seals go. Check the fluid and if it is not milky do not re seal it. Keep it simple. Don't worry about the rattle right now. The engine was only running on one cylinder. Find and fix that first. Lots of times the starter assemblies on those...

What to watch out for: 1990(ish) 15hp Johnson

Buy OEM parts....not aftermarket. The carb kits are complete and the impellers fit correctly vs. sometimes fitting. Marineengine.com is your friend. Compression should be within 10% of each other. Yes, 60psi is low but we have beaten this compression gauge subject to death in here. Almost no...

Anyone out there running low compression motors?

OMC never recommended an open throttle on a 2-strooke for compression testing. Air box does not matter either as it is not restrictive in the least. Compression gauges all have the Schrader valve in-line that allows compression in but not out. Once compression stabilizes in the line....that's...

    1972 Evinrude 4206

Let me look that up for you That comes up as a 1972 4hp. Should take the standard OMC single line fuel hose and primer bulb. Should have points and condensers in it as well. Not sure about your three prongs unless you are counting the cast aluminum boss that helps align and protect the female...

Anyone out there running low compression motors?

The 49 cu.in engines after many years had a tendency to sort of "go to sleep" at idle or just off idle. They would simply slow down, slower and slower until they quit........good compression and all. What is happening is that the engine has lost crankcase compression. Worn piston skirts...

1959 Johnson 2 cycle 18 hp motor compression

Yes the engine is well worth saving and running. Those are great engines. Do NOT change the points as the replacement points available these days are pretty much junk in comparison. LIghtly dress the ones you have. You will need to change the condensers. Your old condensers may be leaking and...

    help with 18 hp Johnson 2 cycle 1959 f-13

Probably just a set of points that need to be cleaned. Do that before you do much else. As far as compression goes now is not the time to worry. Not all compression gauges are accurate and your numbers are based on a pretty dry engine. Mix should be a 24:1 mix and no leaner on oil....EVER. Your...

    Prop advise

In general a 4-bl prop will get you on plane a bit quicker and provide better slippage rates up through mid-range RPMs (fuel economy) and hang in a bit better through corners at the expense of giving up a bit of speed at WOT. All of this depends on YOUR set up.

    Prop advise

Most folks get hung up on the diameter and that is where a lot of confusion comes in. Pay more attention to the pitch number. This is the bare minimum K.I.S.S. method and for the most part.......it works. Diameter and the number of blades gains importance when the application deviates from the...

    Outboard pre-start warm up… Harmful?

Always nicer to start the engine at home and verify. Keeps you from being "That Guy" ........ Trus story - Was working a photo shoot for OMC and had to be at the Sarasota Hyatt for several days. This was during the heyday of glitzy twin 454 powered offshore boat that were all noise and not a...

    Johnson outboard wire harness help

BUT.....that is still a general statement as harnesses can be from a dash mounted ignition switch and gauges or from a side mounted control or a console mounted control/key switch. What he is asking for is simply more and more specific information. Simple. Secondly, what issue are you having...

    Evinrude 4806E 4HP Weedless Prop Alternative ?

Well your situation would be the exception and not the norm, wouldn't it? OMC sold probably over a million of these little engines from around 1953 onward and they do perfectly fine. OMC engineering did not design the trim range to bring the prop within a half inch of the water surface at the...

    Evinrude 4806E 4HP Weedless Prop Alternative ?

The thrust angle is not incorrect. Trim the engine to the farthes pin hole and the thrust angle is roughly parallel to the bottom of the boat.and the gearcase sits farther back in clean water at that trim position. The standard 3-blade propeller is definitely quicker than the weedless. On a...

    Evinrude 4806E 4HP Weedless Prop Alternative ?

Pretty simple. I know there were standard looking alternative 3-blade props that were definitely capable of making a difference in performance. Look around on Ebay and see what you can come up with. Do us a favor though and tell us the results if you would be so kind. Use a cell phone based...

    50hp mercury issues

Agree. No need to start troubleshooting before a lot more information about the issue is produced. Running in a barrel? on a boat? What was done to the engine? Engine new to the OP? More information the better or it just turns into another internet guessing game!
