    1650 Sylvan Jet project

I've been busier than ever, so I haven't really posted many projects recently, but here are a few pictures of some upgrades I did to a customer's 1650 Sylvan w/ Merc 40/25 jet. Here's what we started with. The original plywood transom was shot, and the transom had a noticeable curve to it...

    Rear deck fish finder?

I've found that on most bass boats, the console unit is actually fairly easy to see from the rear deck, and the transom mount transducer is already in the correct spot for the coangler anyway.

Bed Liner on the inside of the boat

I do too. I've installed the Tuff Coat in a boat I've owned, but I'm not the biggest fan of the texture. I had a customer Line-X a boat after I finished the fabrication, and last I've heard, he was very pleased with the results. Now, I say all this in regard to the deck surface for...

What type of oil for lower unit?

It's 80W 90 gear oil. API GL-5 rated. Some say there are differences in the additives making the 'marine' gear lube more water resistant than the 'automotive,' but I've yet to see any differences in the MSDS that would suggest that. Any auto parts store or Walmart would have it both in a...

    Short battery cables...

$1.24 a foot with free shipping and excellent customer service. https://shop.genuinedealz.com/Marine%20Grade%20Wire/Marine%20Battery%20Cable/6%20AWG%20Battery%20Cable%20UL/ I too would replace the wire as one run.

New guy needs Bass Tracker help :(

I don't think they are talking about the kill switch, but instead the neutral safety switch, which just doesn't let the starter work when the engine is in gear.

I want to get a really nice bimini top and boat cover?

Boot is the accessory piece of fabric that zips up around the folded top to protect it, and keep it bundled neatly. My main suggestion is to get the extra strut braces - most of the smaller tops attach to the boat in the middle, then use straps that pull fore and aft to keep it upright...

    Another rivet question...

Are you sure it was 3/32 and not 3/16? 3/16 is a very common rivet size, especially considering you mention 5 rivets holding in the bench seat, as opposed to a much greater number. I'd check that first, but even so, I agree with the above poster in upsizing the holes to account for any...

Obviously, I haven't seen it, but based on the description, I have no doubt it's worth at least that.

    Boats On Land ( Alweld's w/ Gators )

The dent in the bow of the first boat looks like someone may have forgotten to look out for telephone poles....

    aluminum transom

Here's one I installed last week. I'll probably do a write up of the entire boat sometime later this week, but here are a couple (poor photo quality and messy shop, I'm sorry), pics to give you an idea. Boat is a 1650 riveted boat. Outboard is a Mercury 40/25 jet, which was reinstalled on a...

    Wire Wheel

Sorry, that was poorly phrased. I can see where the confusion arises. I was refuting the statement saying that if you aren't welding, it is okay to use a carbon steel brush on aluminum. To answer you're question: Whether or not you are welding, one needs to use a stainless steel wire brush.

    Aluminum Sheet ?'s

ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials B209 - Standards used by ASTM that pertains to this particular sheet. Just shows that this sheet does meet all the standards set in section B209 H32 - Temper designation. Now, on to the answer you were actually looking for - yes, this is...

    Wire Wheel

I disagree completely with the statement of using SS only if you're planning on welding. Never use a steel wire brush on aluminum. As far as the Harbor freight one posted, the wire is a bit coarse for my liking (.5mm equates to about .019, and I try to never exceed .012 or .014, and yes...

    Tracker 1448 Rear Deck storage

That bimini won't need to be folded down when on the lake. That had been an original concern, but he went ahead and purchased the bars that replace the rear straps, that way the bimini can be folded into the boot, but still standing, for times he doesn't want it open. We folded it down just...
