Need a reason to tie your boat down??? Watch this (4 mins)

Years back I watched a guy remove the bow safety chain before backing down the ramp. It was at least a 28 -30 footer with twin outboards on an older trailer. Part way down the ramp the winch strap decided to say adios and the boat slid off. All of it's considerable weight rested on the skegs and...

Need a reason to tie your boat down??? Watch this (4 mins)

About a year ago I had been on the water all day. I was tired, hot and hungry and got back to the ramp around dusk. While loading my boat the trailer tongue, which had seen way too much saltwater, broke almost totally off. I remembered I had paid Sea Tow an extra $20 for road service and after...

    Finished transom

You sir are extremely talented. Rhetorically speaking, from tins to Parkers is there anything you cannot do ?

    Pressure treated question.

Do not use pressure treated lumber on an aluminum boat or for trailer bunks. The chemicals in the lumber will react with the aluminum causing corrosion and holes in the boat. I made a small v bunk for the bow of my boat and inadvertently used 2 pieces of pressure treated 2"x6". With in one year...

Homemade Penetrating Fluid - the BEST you can use! DIY too

Thanks Dale. Going to remember this as my usual go to tool is my oxygen and acetylene torch but sometimes it's not practical.

    Boat crank winch ?

Handles are not made for winching. It would be wise to add a ubolt and reinforce the hull where the ubolt is going through. I use wood scraps cut to about 3"x4"(or what ever size fits) then fender washers, regular flat washers, and nylon lock nuts. The force exerted by the winch needs to be...

Is a new small outboard worth the money?

I can't disagree with the previous comments but as I've gotten older (read ... lost patience with the sometimes cantankerous older motors) I like the reliability of new. It comes down to what you can afford.

Front or rear mount trolling motor

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me but I do not care for bow mount motors at least on boats in the 14-16' range. I find them to be awkward and taking up too much precious deck space. Previous owner put a bow mount on my boat. I took it off and bought a transom mount but don't use it...

    Electrical wiring help with diagram

I doubt a 30 amp fuse is big enough for your TM. I would install a larger breaker 50-60 amp.and wire that to a trolling motor plug. Check out this link for the Minn Kota chart, it has the info you need. file:///C:/Users/Dennis/Documents/Condutor-Gauge-and-Circuit-Table_9-11-14.pdf

Battery at one end of boat, elec. motor at other - wiring?

Regardless of costs using under size cables will not work or will not work satisfactorily. This Conductor Gauge and Circuit Breaker Sizing Table is on the Minn-Kota site and I'm sure the numbers work for most TMs https://www.minnkotamotors.com/Support/Battery-Selection---Rigging/

    Pedestal mount repair?

Drill out the pedestal mount screw holes to a larger size and use larger screws or ... Replace the mount and drill new holes in different locations than the original holes or ... Get a piece of flat stock and cut a large hole in the center to accept the pedestal. Attach that to the bench with...

    Hull pitting underneath bunks

When I bought my boat the previous owner put PT bunks on with carpet. I didn't realize it until I saw the pitting. Cleaned up the pits and applied JB Weld. New carpeted Fir bunks and no more problems. I also run salt flats.

real world differences in small jons and v hulls

I agree. Inshore we get a fair amount of chop even in the creeks and almost everybody uses some variation of a V. The saying here goes,"a flat bottom boat will slap you silly".
