    1990 Yamaha 25

It slows down the rate that the timing ******* so that it don't sneeze on quick deceleration. The holes on the newer ones are slotted so that it can be moved forward or backward, which kinda tailors deceleration. When I say deceleration, I mean just before the carbs go back to idle. When the...

    1990 Yamaha 25

they have the oiling system totally figured out on those. I have never seen one give any trouble in 30 years of working on them. They used the same system on wave runners, also almost bulletproof. I say "almost" because on jet ski's, they oft roll them over and this introduces air into the...

Does your motor have an air filter?

Ain't never seen a traditional outboard that had an air filter. But I wish they did. If nothing else but to keep the dirt dobber nests from getting into the engine when they break free of the block, flywheel, whatever.

40 hp Yamaha water coming out of everything

Look at the diagrams on boats.net. Lower drive 2 section Seal, damper and guide (#1 and #2 ) make sure they are installed. Those help keep some of the exhaust water out of the shift rod area.

40 hp Yamaha water coming out of everything

I don't know which 40 you have (there are about 4 different ones) but it doesn't sound unusual. Some of them had a little rubber gasket on the top of the foot that helped keep some of the exhaust water out of the shift rod area, but I don't remember which motors used that. May have just been...

Pros/cons between Yamaha, Mercury, and Evinrude 2-strokes?

wouldn't give you $.02 for a johnnyrude. I've had a bunch of them over the years, mostly 9.9's and 15's. The only good thing I can say about them is that you can get almost (almost) every aftermarket part to fix them. OEM parts are going away slowly. Note that aftermarket stuff isn't always...

    up or down ?

down if it ever gets below freezing. If left up and it freezes, the water's expansive force at around 33 degrees F is substantial enough to destroy stuff. If left down and in the water, there is chance of corrosion. Severe corrosion depending on the water. Also chance of marine growth. Even...

    Cup coolers

and another tip (off topic) if you have a small cooler like I do, enough for 4 or 5 cans and that's about it, stick the cooler itself in the freezer a day or two ahead of time. I leave mine in the freezer full time unless I'm at the lake. That little cooler makes a dandy minner bucket. It...

    transducer mounting

I bought a fish finder/gps FINALLY. I ain't got it in yet, but I'm planning on where to put it, etc. I know where I want the head unit. Garmin striker 7SV if it matters. It's gonna be near the front seat area, mounted on a ram style mount. I think I already have a ram, just don't know...

    jon boat proportions - questions

yes and no. Local river is very popular for trout fishing, the most popular and useful hull is a 20' length 48" width with a jet outboard to get over the really shallow gravel shoals (less than 6" depth) but it is absolutely USELESS at the lake that this river's tailwater is famous for. This...

    3 gal vs 6 gal

look at it from another standpoint. what is the usage? Do you jump in the boat, and run for 10+ miles one way full throttle? Are you using a 2 or 4 stroke? What size? And lastly and just as-if not MORE imporantly-how long does it sit between uses? If you make long runs and/or are using a...

    Suzuki 20HP tiller steer

this is EXACTLY why I didn't buy a suzuki. I love the quiet/smooth operation. It is a little on the over-rated side, little weak getting on plane but i could have lived with it. That tiller, though. I could not get past it, period. You don't have a lot of options. Transom wedges really...

    Buying a new outboard online

well said. One of many reasons I bought mine local. Paid $100 more than if I'd have bought it online. Worth it to me.

    1994 Mercury 60/45 no spark

I know I'm late to the party but that's normal for me. it is not at all uncommon for electrical, specifically in this discussion, ignition components to resistance test just fine, yet they are still defective or broken. I came from a yamaha background and one of the first things they taught...

    15hp for a 14' boat?

Outta see what the local boat racers are doing. Well they call themselves "duck hunters" but racing is about what it amounts to. 90hp motors on 15' aluminum boats. High $$$ modified stuff. Some of these guys are approaching 90mph now. 60s are the norm. Set up correctly the hull is not in...

    2020 Yamaha F25 Question

I made plenty of progress, but not on the trim switch! Changed jobs last year....and with that, a BUNCH of their old (or my old) customers also moved away from that dealer. In years' past I never did side work on stuff I worked on at work, as I felt like it may be considered "stealing" from...

    15hp for a 14' boat?

I'd own a honda they're "usually" heavy though, even for a 4 stroke. On a 14' boat (if it's a 1432 or 1436), that might be an issue. Look at the specs, I haven't looked at a 15hp Honda, for all I know it might be 75 lbs? My dad's 1436 Weldcraft handles a 20hp yamaha (4 stroke) ok, but it IS...

    JACK PLATE

one of the many "local" boat builders will modify the transom either way, to run a long on a short boat, or to run a short on a 21". It's not too expensive either. A jack plate isn't going to be the best option here. Plus, it'll look kinda weird and place the tiller at a much higher level...

Speed for Sea Nymph 1648 w/ new Suzuki df25

28 is all we could ever muster out of the one we were "tuning". Basic war eagle 544 w/ new suzuki DF25 on a PT35. After propping changes of course. I loved the idle quality but it seemed like it was underpowered for a 25. My hull is not quite as efficient, yet 4 mph faster, also with a 25 on...
