I can smell gas even after tightening cap.

I have a heavy duty plastic five gallon gas can. No matter how much I tighten the cap, I can still smell gas. It looks like the container is in good shape, but I can't seem to get rid of the odor. The only place I have to store the gas can is in a small garage. I wonder how much vapor is...

    AeroMarine Foam

I want to add foam for flotation, and was trying to figure out what to use. I was searching around the Internet and found this. I wonder if anyone here gas used this, or something similar. I would like feedback from the Tin Boat Men. https://www.aeromarineproducts.com/boat-foam.htm...

How to connect to the sloping sides of my boat?

I want to add a deck over part of my boat, but don't know what to anchor to. I could span the width of the boat with aluminum angles, but how would I anchor the angles to the sides of the boat? The angles that span the width of the boat would be a few inches below the tops of the sides.

    Bilge Pump Selection

When selecting a bilge pump, is bigger better? From looking at the bilge pump selections at The Academy, you can get bilge pumps rated anywhere from 360 to 1200 GPM, all about the same price. Is there any disadvantage of having the bilge pump with the largest capacity?

What can I put on the boat to keep it cool?

I don't want to put carpet on my boat because I will be fishing shallow saltwater and will be getting in and out to wade. Carpet would get filthy very quickly. Would a spray or roll on bed liner help keep the aluminum cool? Has anyone ever tried putting any other kind of coating or membrane...

How tall of a step ladder for casting platform?

I have a 1652 jon boat. I fish the shallow saltwater flats. I want to mount an aluminum ladder on the front deck for a casting platform. I want to be able to stand on the ladder on the rung that would allow for the top of the ladder to be about belly high. I am guessing that if I had an 8'...

Honda 2 hp air cooled motor

The Owner's manul says that the cavitation plate needs to be about 5" below the surface of the water to prevent over heating. But, how can this be? This little motor is air cooled. If you ran it with the cavitation plate right at the waterline, why would the motor over heat?

    Diminishing returns on motor size

It stands to reason that a bigger motor will make a boat faster, but I would only expect for this to be true up to a point. Then I would expect for there to be diminishing returns for larger and larger motor sizes. If my boat is a 1652 what would be the ideal motor size to get the biggest bang...

Difference in draft with flat bottom vs shallow Vee?

I realize that flat bottom boats will draft less, while shallow Vee bottoms will ride better in rough water. I am not interested in a deep Vee bottom boat. But, how much difference are we talking about? If you had a 1652 flat bottom or shallow Vee like these Alwelds, how much difference in...

    1436 front deck framing - - - - - - - - - - NEW PICS PAGE 2!

I asked about having the battery and gas tank close to each other in an earlier post. Most of the guys here advised me not to do it. That would especially hold true in a totally enclosed storage compartment, where gas fumes could accumulate.

    Guidelines for rivet size?

Can anyone give some general guidelines for how big aluminum rivets I need for various applications? If I want to hold structural aluminum angles in place, would 1/8" rivets be enough?

Make raised platform even with the top of the hull?

When making a raised casting deck, is it better to make the casting deck a few inches below the top of the hull so there is a lip to keep things from rolling off, or is it better to make the casting deck flush with the top of the hull so that water will drain off of the boat?

A bit confused about aluminum corrosion

It is my understanding that bare aluminum will corrode, but will then form a very tight layer of aluminum oxide which will protect against further corrosion. If you clean off the aluminum oxide, the aluminum will corrode a bit more but will then form another layer of protective aluminum oxide...

Do you need to separate your battery from the gas?

I know that this is a newbie question, but it is my understanding that people like to put their batteries and gas tanks as far forward as possible to achieve better weight distribution. I have a raised platform at the bow of my boat full of foam. If I chose to leave this intact, then I could...

Does the foam really make the boat more quiet?

I know that people put foam underneath their false floors for sound deadening, if you had the false floor without the foam would their be a significant difference?

How big should the aluminum pieces be that you put down?

Put down for decking that is. I found a guy that can weld aluminum for a good price. I am thinking of cutting the aluminum and using enough rivets to hold it in place and then let this guy weld it. If I put down the largest sheets that I can manage, it would result in a clean look, but would...

What kind of foam did the put in those old boats anyway?

I have seen other threads where people have stripped their boats and discovered that the foam in their boats was completely waterlogged. I was outside just now reaching underneath my bench seats feeling the foam. It is a firm rough feeling foam, and when I press my fingers in it they come away...

    Stainless steel screws in aluminum

When stainless steel screws are used in aluminum in a saltwater environment, it will cause corrosion to the aluminum. I bring this up because I have seen several references to people using stainless steel fasteners. I realize that aluminum fasteners are not as strong, but wouldn't that still...

What to do about my transom?

I am not sure what I am looking at, but I think my transom has an inner and outer layer of aluminum with some kind of material sandwiched in between. At least I think the inner layer is aluminum. I tried to scratch it with a utility knife and it was pretty hard. Anyway, there is a small leak...
