Is there any down side to using steel flex?

Also worried about scraping some rocks and under water trees. The river here can get shallow quick. Thought the steel flex or something like it should also help protect it.

I have a 1967 14' wide(5 1/2 ft across the top) flat bottom. Stripping the outside of the boat down to bare metal and wondering what to use to protect the outside. The bottom and the lower side have some pitting, nothing deep. Is steelflex the best thing to put on it? It doesnt leak at...
