I'm using tinted water seal. Coating it about 10 times or so, lol. It seems as if the older transoms were good plywood that was just painted and sealed well. They lasted for years so the multi coated water sealer should last for several years or so. I am trying to get 10 good years of use...

I don't think you should need transom braces. If your just going to run a 9.9 the factory transom should be fine. Those old boats are built well. Should handle a 9.9 just fine.
