Thanks for the response, Jim . Is this the stuff you are referring to?

    Sealants

I read somewhere that automotive sealants such as Permatex Form-a-gasket would destroy the metal in OB casings. Any truth to that?

    Torquing the flywheel nut.

The rope through the sparkplug hole tip worked like a jewel. Had the opportunity to share the tip to a neighbor having a similar problem. Worked like magic for her, and I came off looking like a genius. Thanks for the help, gentlemen

Any tips on holding the flywheel still while torquing the nut on a 56 "J" 10 horse?

I have recently located a local source of ethanol free gasoline. Do I still need a fuel stabilizer?

    Head bolt question.

Thanks for the insight, Pappy. When speaking of lubricants, I assume you are referring to dry or semi-dry lubricants like molyb or graphite ?

    Head bolt question.

Preparing to reinstall the head on my 56 Johnson 10 horse and noticed something odd about the original bolts. Initially, I thought they had been painted aluminum color but even acetone wouldn't dissolve it. They are steel bolts, but it appears to be some form of aluminumized plating. That's just...

    Crankshaft/Piston Binding Problem

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. March was a very rough month for me. T Turned out to be a totally different problem then I originally thought. The shaft of the connecting rods is offset from the center line of the rod to provide clearance to the counter weights mounted on the side...

    Crankshaft/Piston Binding Problem

Removed the crankcase cover today. Didn't take long to find the problem, but the question is why. When the lower piston is in the down stroke, the bottom of the piston skirt is bottoming out on the lip/flange at the bottom of the cylinder.

    Crankshaft/Piston Binding Problem

I have been rebuilding my 1956 Johnson 10hp from top to bottom over the winter as time permitted. I got the crankcase cover installed today and ran into an issue when trying to rotate the crankshaft. Upper piston will rise in the cylinder when the crankshaft, but binds when the top of the piston...

    Shift rod connector question.

When connecting the shift rod halves, should the connector bolts be tightened only until tight or until the gaps in the connector are closed?

    Spaghetti gasket source.

Anyone know of an online source for spaghetti gasket (309044) that sells by the foot. I hate spending $30 for a 50 foot roll when I only need a foot or so.

    Lower unit issue.

Really appreciate the link, Pappy. Exactly what I was looking for and not finding in the service manual. One question though. You make mention of a slot in the adjustment bracket behind the shift handle. Mine has 2 holes like the picture below rather than a slot. The slot makes perfect sense...

    Lower unit issue.

Thanks, Pappy. You mentioned earlier in this thread that you had posted a number of posts detailing how to adjust this style of shift arrangement but I can't seem to find any with search. Would you happen to remember the title of any of the posts?

    Lower unit issue.

I have attached below a photo of the reverse and forward gears and the clutch dog removed from my motor lower unit. I'm seeing some damage on the clutch dog ears (red arrows), a lesser amount of wear/tear on the gear ears (yellow arrow) and some pitting on the gear teeth (green arrow). The...
