I read somewhere that automotive sealants such as Permatex Form-a-gasket would destroy the metal in OB casings. Any truth to that?

Not my experience, but buy the little tub of the Bombardier/OMC gasket compound to be safe. I also use this to seal ANY stainless steel bolt threaded into aluminum, e.g., lower unit SS bolts, waterpump housings, etc. ... and they come apart easily the next time I do the scheduled replacement. There's a little brush applicator on the cap or I just dip the threads into it. Also use on any gasket, e.g., cylinder heads, thermostats, waterpump housings, etc. I bought that tub 20+ years ago and now only have a little left ... gotta git another one!
