    Motorguide the latest to fail

This is correct and a lot of people don’t realize that a TON of these brands are owned by the same parent corporations. I have an inside connection that tipped me off the Motorguide brand was being dissolved. Navico/Brunswick will still be making trolling motors, just not as Motorguide. I...

70’s Starcraft 14’ Seafarer “By Golly”

Here's an encouragement to everyone on here fixing up an old tin floater, or thinking of fixing one up. The work of restoring can be long and tiresome, but I feel it is absolutely worth it. These boats can have so much life left in them! A friend and I probably landed over 100 pounds of Lake...

I just noticed that I never follow up regarding the "notch" in the side console. I don't have a good picture of it, but that notch holds a carpeted insert which supports my trolling motor when it is in the stored position. When I go to launch the boat, I can remove and stow the support piece so...

Thanks LDUBS! It's not the easiest motor to replace, being short-shaft, electric start, and remote steering (for an early Johnson anyway), so fixing was ideal. I'm really happy that it's held up. I'll actually be salmon fishing out of it later today and tomorrow!

70’s Starcraft 14’ Seafarer “By Golly”

I definitely keep an eye out on a few online marketplaces. I have looked at, and found, inexpensive parts motors from years close to mine, but I was never able to confirm cross-compatibility with 100% certainty. Once or twice I saw exact match motors, but they were fairly far away. It would be...

I haven't posted in a while...the outboard fix has been working great! No leaks.

    Remove middle bench.

Thanks! Yes, any grey carpet you see has sealed wood underneath.

    DIY jackplate

2.5" aluminum angle. 1/4" thick. Motor is a 20hp Johnson short shaft, roughly 90 pounds.

I know you don’t want any set back, but here’s a picture of my bracket. I haven’t seen any issues with flex or stress on the transom. Works great.

Do I really "need" a casting deck?

Speaking as a guy who did decide to do quite a few mods - get to know your boat before you do anything. Take it out several times, heck, take the whole summer to fish with it. This will really cement which projects you think are worth doing. Diving into this forum can spark a lot of good and...

Yes, here’s to hoping my prep job was good! I sanded out the epoxy a bit, but it’s still noticeable. Motor is back together. New seals and gaskets on the gearcase group. I polished sealing surfaces and generally cleaned up what I could internally. Also cleaned up the gearcase exterior and...

Yes, that’s the plan. Sand it out smooth and hopefully it won’t be noticeable, because I think I’ll try and paint my lower unit while everything is apart.

External coat of epoxy on. I’m using a product called Devcon 10760. Expensive stuff, thankfully my employer is freely letting me use it, as we keep it stocked at work. It’s a titanium putty that we use for other hydraulic sealing applications. Going to do the inside today.

I started working on my lower unit this week. I drilled out the end of the crack to prevent it from spreading further and then notched a channel along the crack, both inside and out. It’s a little scary having a hole in the lower and being able to see daylight through the crack, but this should...

    Remove middle bench.

Here’s what I did to reinforce the hull after deleting my center bench. Port side braces double as rod holders. Starboard braces integrate into a captains chair base. All braces are fixed up top to the original bench mount and on the bottom to the hull ribs. Not the quickest solution, but worked...

It's time.. Finally starting my 77 14' Seafarer build/ rebuild.

Woo hoo a Seafarer twin! I'll be following closely! I wire wheeled mine with stainless and never felt like I was taking too much off or hurting the rivet/head at all. Didn't go crazy prepping around rivets and all the sealing work I did seemed to bond great.

Paint advice. Help me put lipstick on this pig!

This is basically what I did and I was very happy with the Rustoleum. I had more bare aluminum after sanding than I originally expected, so I opted to use a primer that works with aluminum prior to painting. Thinned the paint a touch and used a foam roller to good effect.

This is the top portion. The bottom looks fine. It’s already disassembled but I’ll show my fix for it when I get to it. We’ve got some specialty epoxy at my work that’s (titanium?) impregnated we use to seal areas on hydraulic steering gears. Should be ideal for this. If it fails I can always...

70’s Starcraft 14’ Seafarer “By Golly”

I think I cracked it on my last trip out late summer when I had an unfortunate bump on a submerged rock pile. Mid summer I checked oil and everything was fine. Probably also expanded with freezing temps with the water that was in there. My fault for not checking it earlier. This model of...
