1965 12' Sea King - My first boat

Greetings fellow tinboater from NH. Looks like a good project. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. I've been working on a 12ft as well.

I scored 2 motors on CL. They were cheap because both of them don't work. Both motors have good compression. I plan to fix both and keep one.

1971 Montgomery Wards Sea King 1436

My rear seat mount is upside down as well. I agree that it does put the seat at a good height. How did you install the rubber mat?

Rivet holes... rivet or alum weld?

I think welding is better but rivets are more economical. I used sealing pop rivets from mcmaster Carr with washers and sealant. Mcmaster Carr does a good job explaining the differences between each type of rivets. I believe the solid rivets hold better then the pop rivets. My boat was so...

    What's your confidence bait?

Rooster tail spinners for smallmouth any many other species. My kids don't like fishing with them though. The trebile hooks catch them to many weeds.

    Top Water Frogs

I increased my hook ups when I stopped looking at the bait while it was sitting still. It helps me feel the bite rather then see it. Great bait for pads. I use a black color because the water is stained where I fish.

    BBQ Brisket Recipe and technique

I've been experimenting with a brine to keep the brisket moist. I've never tried injecting it. Has anyone tried both and have a preference? Anyways, great recipe. It's making me hungry.

I've thought, fished and built enough on this boat that I am getting closer to finalizing what the rear deck and middle will look like. I've attached some renderings. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

    Just bought a 12' v hull boat

Focusing on only one section at first may help you get started. I thought of many different layouts and found that I really needed to build the front before finalizing the rest. I even modeled some of the layouts in 3D before going that route.

    Nobody's 12' Jon Boat

During the middle of fishing season, I didn't want to do to much that would keep me off the water for long. I did decide to add a deck in the front. I fish with my kids, so I couldn't see making it into a big casting deck.

    Nobody's 12' Jon Boat

The bunks on my trailer were made for another boat then mine. There are dents in the hull where the rollers were. Probably explains what could have caused the rivets to fail. Below are my new bunks. :)

It didn't take long to see the most of the rivets needed to be replaced. Not only was it taking on water but it just wasn't right structually. I found some aluminum sealing rivets on McMaster-Carr as well as U7000 marine sealant (it was cheaper then the 3M stuff). I replaced somewhere around...

    Nobody's 12' Jon Boat

I got this 12ft Jon boat from craigslist. Its a 1966 but the hull number was lost awhile ago. I think it is an appleby. I updated the front deck to get through the fishing season. That is all gone now and I'm in progress of a much bigger overhaul.
