I got this 12ft Jon boat from craigslist. Its a 1966 but the hull number was lost awhile ago. I think it is an appleby. I updated the front deck to get through the fishing season. That is all gone now and I'm in progress of a much bigger overhaul.
It didn't take long to see the most of the rivets needed to be replaced. Not only was it taking on water but it just wasn't right structually. I found some aluminum sealing rivets on McMaster-Carr as well as U7000 marine sealant (it was cheaper then the 3M stuff). I replaced somewhere around 50 rivets. It felt like a new boat when I was done. Probably the best mod I could ever do to this boat.
The bunks on my trailer were made for another boat then mine. There are dents in the hull where the rollers were. Probably explains what could have caused the rivets to fail. Below are my new bunks.
During the middle of fishing season, I didn't want to do to much that would keep me off the water for long. I did decide to add a deck in the front. I fish with my kids, so I couldn't see making it into a big casting deck.
I've thought, fished and built enough on this boat that I am getting closer to finalizing what the rear deck and middle will look like. I've attached some renderings. Please feel free to share your thoughts.
