I know this boat is probably rated for a 35 tiller. My coast guard tags are missing. I have a nice Evinrude 40HP long shaft remote that I would like to put on this boat. I have a short shaft transom, but I will either build up transom or build a nice jack plate. Has anyone ever added a 40HP remote steering to a short shaft Lowe 1648 "BIG JON"?

Here's a few things to consider.... First of all, you may want to call the manufacturer of your boat (LOWE) and give them you boats VIN number. They can send you new coast guard stickers, most likely for free. Sea Ark did it for me because the stickers on my boat were incorrect. Just keep in mind that if your motor HP is over what the coast guard tags say, your insurance company will not cover your boat. As far as the shaft length, you may want to get yourself a jack plate to raise your mounting. Manual jack plates run around $250-$300 or electric hydraulics run about $800 for your size motor. Hope this helps!

Go for it. 35 HP is just about the most conservative rating I've ever heard of for a 1648.

Anything bigger than a 40, I'd suggest going to remote steering though.

Yes gofor it.40hp ona 1648 is bout right and will run good.Better to keep the horses up near the top so the boat goes good.Slow boats with peanut moters are no fun i tell you.You can makes a transome extention out of 2x2 inch x 1/4 inch thick aluminum angle for your baot.I did this on two baots with no regreats. You can allso gets a mini jacker from BassPro for bout 75 dollars

Many boats allow for 10% more in HP, they are classified lower for safety. I would def call the manufacturer but also take into consideration the weight of the motor as well. Also if you add a stronger plate you should def have no problem with the 40.
