Hi,

I purchased a used 18HP 1971 Evenrude outboard. When I go it it ran fine a few months ago. Then I noticed it started dying out and happen to pump the bulb with the cover off and the fuel pump had a crack in it, allowing air to get in, and gas to leak. Also I noticed the rod between the slow idle adjustment and the carberator was not connected, so I connected it. I bought a new fuel pump and replaced it. What I am insure of is the rod.....When I connect it the dial says 1 - 7 but it will only move three stops. I played with the idle rod adjustment trying to get full functionality between the two no avail. I can only get it to move three stops. But now that I played with the rod going into the carb, I can't get the motor started. I pulled the plugs, and there is gas on them suggesting to rich of a fuel mixture. The question is does the Idle adjustment going into the carb allow MORE air when it is turned all the way in. I mean does this rod control/adjust fuel, or air? Thanks.....

Unhook that rod again. Turn that needle clockwise until it lightly seats, turn it back out 1 1/4 turns. Start motor and let it warm up. Turn that needle clockwise 1/8 turn and let the motor respond 10-15 secs, rpms should increase( its leaning it out) lower your rpms with the idle screw. Repeat this 1/8 turn/lowering idle procedure until motor starts to cough or miss ( this is called a lean miss, its not getting enough fuel). Turn the needle back out 1/4 +/- . Whithin that 1/4 turn is where your smoothest idle will be. Now center your knob and rehook the linkage rod- your only gonna get a small adj either way as this is it should be close to where you want to be .
Now this should really be done on the lake, in fwd gear and motor up to temp, but it will get you real close at home in a barrel.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank YOU! Your explicit instructions worked just as you stated. I followed everything and on the second pull the motor started, and this time it stayed running.....after making the other adjustments, I shut it down and it again started, but this time on the first pull. I cannot begin tell you how much I appreciate your help and the information you provided and the expertise this site contains herein on this forum.....Thanks Again for saving my Labor Day week end, and guess what....I learned something! =D> =D> =D>
