1955 Evinrude 7.5 pull starter ?

Hello,
I replaced the recoil spring on the motor listed above now when mounted the starter the dogs ? it seems won’t fly out to grab the flywheel teeth.
Why ?
The spring was broke when I bought motor

Take them apart carefully, clean and lube with two stroke oil. These should move easily with very little pressure. Good starting point.
