I have a dumb question: I have a 2009 mercury 20hp four stroke console steer, to activate the choke supposedly you push the key "in" while turning the key. However with the motor cover off and trying to start I do not see any carb linkage moving showing the choke plate closing. So is it not working or I am just too used to the way a motorcycle or car choke works?

Try just pushing the key in without trying to start it. Might have to at least go to ignition on but stop short of starting. If you listen closely you will hear an electric "click". Now I've never seen the linkage move on my 50hp, and don't think I have on my 20hp 4 stroke either which means it might not be visible but the noise is audible just slightly. I was told to push the key in under ignition a couple times before trying to start the motor.

Cool thanks. I will try it. It started fine in the yard with the water hose. I will try to hear that click, I think I have heard it before but didn't know that's what it was.

When the electric choke solenoid on my 20 operates, it turns the arm that is connected directly to the choke butterfly shaft so the manual choke linkage never moves but the butterfly does.
