36lb. motorguide transom mount died

I've had 2 of these die in the last couple of months.

One lost both reverse speeds and the other is down to barely one reverse and two forward.

Can anyone tell me if this is a common occurance and would be a simple fix like taking apart and cleaning some contacts? Or should I retire them to the curb because parts would be almost replacement cost?

I realize they are cheap motors but if I can get them running and use for spares I will.

I HAVE NEVER HAD MOTOR GUIDE ALWAYS MINN KOTA BUT I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MINE THE REBUILD KITS ARE PRETTY CHEAP FOR MINE ID TRY IT, MINE ARE STILL IN SERVICE AS WE SPEAK, AND IT WASNT HARD TO DO AT ALL.
