Ahoy-hoy tinboaters! I'm new to the world of tin boats, and not exactly a Rhodes Scholar on other types of boats either. Anyway, I recently purchased an 8 ft sea maid for $100; the three sets of oars were probably worth that much alone. My last boat was 1092 feet long and 250 ft wide with a working surface of 4.2 acres. So the stability wasn't a problem, but the stability of my new toy is of great concern to me, as I weigh 250 plus. I been in it and paddled around, and it still rides pretty high. However, I am wondering about taking a second adult in it. It's alll about the fishin', not the recreation.
I believe this Sea Maid was made prior to 1972, because it does not have a weight rating on the nomenclature tag. So if anyone has an inclination as to its weight capabilities, I'd greatly appreciate your input.
In any case, I been contemplating putting a single outrigger on it with a stationary rudder, or perhaps a set of outriggers. I'm concerned with the outriggers interfering with my fishing line. I hate to lose "the big one" because the outrigger tangled me up. I understand a long handled net would be pretty much mandatory. What I was wondering is how big to make the buoys, and is it worth my while to go through the expense. I really like that I can pick this thing up and put it in the back of my truck by myself. Maybe my brother needs to go get his own boat. Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.
