I have started looking around for one.

I figure if I am going to spend the money, I may as well get one that I can use both on the road and as a handheld outdoor unit.

There don't seem to be too many of these types on the market and the reviews are somewhat sketchy. Battery life seems to be the main issue.

Any input on a good model is appreciated.

I have heard good things about the Lowrance XOG and the Magellan (not sure the model name).

I don't use either, but have heard good things. I use a Lowrance H2OC handheld and love it. It doesn't route you on the road, but is great for marking waypoints of fishin holes, deer stands, cover, and will track your path.

Those are the two that I have been leaning toward.

The downside to the XOG is that the battery life is practically zilch per the reviews that I have read. The Magellan is not available at any store within 45 miles of me, including the big box electronics stores. I'm not sure what the deal is with that.

There is a new Garmin out there that looks really nice but it is over twice as much $ as either of the others, too.

Anyone here use any sort of handheld?

After talking to a friend that has an XOG, I think I will steer clear of that one. He said the battery life is horrible and it is a real compromise between the two type units.

I have heard the Magellan crossover is as well and that you can buy a nice handheld plus a serviceable car unit for the same price.

Tonight, I have been doing some research on the Garmin Venture HC. I'm just not sure that the available lake maps can be loaded onto them.
