Not sure if this post goes here or boat talk...anyways.
My boats rated for a 35hp tiller or 60hp console.
I know a guy that has a 60hp tiller on his mossing boat and would to trade me for my 30hp.He is not worried about speed only gas savings and I wouldn't really mind a bigger outboard.

I think why my rating is higher on the console(60hp)is because of weight issues in the stern,if it were a tiller.Correct me if I'm wrong.

My thinking is if I were to add floatation pads(sponsons)to offset the weight do you think the authorities would have a problem?
Is there a way to get "certification"with coast guard or something?
I'm pretty sure the insurance flag will be risen so I guess I'm just wondering about certification and if the weight issue is why a console can have a bigger outboard.

1 more question maybe another post...Does everyone have insurance on their boats?I don't,unless maybe my house insurance has something,no riders.

I would contact the manufacturer and see what they say. Who knows, they might issue you a new capacity plate, it's worth a ask. Your going to need sponsons to hold down the front. They should act like trim tabs. I've built several fiberglass boats and the Coast Guard has mathematical formulas for figuring HP. They will deduct 30 - 40 percent on tillers. After all, you are adding length and volume to the boat????

I have my bigger $$$ boats insured. The policies are not that expencive if you were to have a total loss. You need to read the fine print. One Progressive agent was selling policies around here for "total replacement coverage". I personally know of two and have heard more people having an accident and all they did was pay estimated value, not replacement. I know one that is taking them to court over this.

Louisiana has a Bill waiting approval that makes it mandatory to have boat insurance.
