Wow this is a great site. Newbie to the boards.

I acquired a 14' Generation 3 hawk 1989 jon boat. The motor crapped out so I have a brand new Four Stroke Tohatsu 15 hp that weighs about 114 lbs. to go on the boat. Since this a older boat I was wondering if it could handle the weight of this new 15 hp. It is originally classified for a 15hp.

Also I have some transom concerns/issues to resolve. Three of the rivots have popped out on the inside angle branket port aft transom side. Was wondering about a fix? I was considering stainless fasteners with washers and nuts of course?

Also will this transom be solid enough for this motor?

Also I seem to have several holes in the transom. Is JB Weld a good fix?

Also I am strictly a Saltwater guy so please don't hold that against me. Didn't know if that would make a difference on repair issues. I mainly use the boat for Flounder Gigging and Shrimping.

Thanks in advance Clint

I would paint the hull inside and out with something like steelflex. The holes are caused by electrloisis.I would pull the transom out and replace it with non pressure treated exterior plywood sealed with a quality water sealer.I would also do an exterior plate out of the same plywood.JB weld will fall out because of hull flex.I would seal the holes with 3M 5200 marine sealant since you will be in the salt.Make sure your wire and the motors wiring is not touch any metal.Use wire chases made of plastic.Another issue is faulty ignition and plug wires.Make sure no spark is arcing off the plug wires or coil. All you have to do is a test run at night in the dark and watch the plug wires and coils for electrical arcs.Use only stainless steel fasteners and seal them with 3M 5200 marine sealant. The transom should hold that motor just double plate it with non pressure treated plywood.Double plating is plywood transom on the inside with a small plate on the outside where the motor mounts.I would use 1/2 to 3/4 inch AC exterior fir plywood.
