My next door neighbor bought a boat with a 32#MK endura. It runs backwards.Can he simply reverse polarity at the battery?

Is the motor spinning backward when connected red to + and black to -? Or is it a transom motor mounted on the bow?

If it is the transom mounted on bow then you will be attempting to go forward using the reverse speeds which usually are not as powerful. Most of those motors have 5 forward and 3 reverse speeds as when the prop is spinning backwards it will not be as efficient, especially at higher speeds. Better idea is to "reverse" the head on the motor.

The prop spins the wrong way. Reversing polarity to the battery seems to work. Thanks

The motor has been disassembled and the magnet housing is 180 degrees out. Remove the prop, remove the two long screws that hold the motor together, do not remove but rotate the housing 180 degrees and reassemble.

????? - the housing positioning has nothing to do with the motor rotation. Otherwise, the motor direction would be dependent upon what position the armature stops when shut off.

I would agree with your statement about the "motor" being disassembled, but it was done at the head (reversed 180) and not in the foot.

The statement krawler made is correct, if some messed with the lower unit.
Switching the leads will work but I bet someone had the lower unit apart...

Actually it does matter, the magnets are set in a specific positive/negative orientation that correlate with the positive/negative brushes on the communicator. If the magnets are reversed or if the voltage is reversed then the motor will run backwards.
