Just the other day I decided to put my hand controlled trolling motor on the bow instead of the transom. So of course, I reversed the head so that the handle would face me when clamped on. Once I got out to the lake the next day after reversing the head, I turned the trolling motor on to the 1st speed. The head unit of the trolling motor started smoking like crazy so I shut it off real quick and checked to make sure that I didn't hook up the wires wrong to the battery. They were hooked fine so I checked out where the smoke was coming from underneath the head unit and one of the visible wires ( the white one ) looked fried. So I let it quit smoking then turned it on to go forward just to see if it worked at all. Well it did end up working, but not until i got to the 3rd speed. So now, in forwards, only 3-5 speeds work and in reverse only 2 and 3 work. I have no idea what to do about it and I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone on here and if anyone had any advice. BTW it is a 55lb thrust minn kota.

Thanks,
Jack

It might just be a speed switch for that model then. Pull up the parts list for the model you believe you have and see if all the parts looks right. https://www.warnersdock.com/Minnkota/Minnkota2012.htm

Thanks JMichael.

Mike, I thought that might still be good, but I wasn't sure if by reversing the head, that voided the warranty. I will probably give them a call and see what they say. Thanks for the input.

It should be covered. Minnkota even gives instructions on their website. https://www.minnkotamotors.com/service/faq.aspx?linkidentifier=id&itemid=817#ctl00_ctl00_ctl00_skin_body_variant_body_nav_body_Directory1
