Catfish setup

Any of you fish for large catfish? What kind of rod and reel combo do you use. I fished with my brother in laws "cat" rod which I think was a Berkley and it seemed to have just the right stiffness and length. The reel was a bait caster and worked ok but I am not a bait caster guy I never have took the time to learn how to use them properly. In this case were parked over the deep channel and just dropped the bait to 30 feet and drift fished. Did quite well and did they taste good :lol:

I use a Shakespear Sturdy Stik with an Ocean City reel.

I have a Sturdy Stik and a Abu Garcia 6600. I'm not sure about other type of reels like this but the Garcia is much easier to cast then my bass fishing bait caster. I haven't back lashed it once. And not that I need it but I can cast a pretty good distance too.

I use a Shakespeare Sturdy Stick with a Penn 209 Levelwind reel spooled with 80lb PowerPro braided line. I use a slip sinker rig with at least an 8/0 circle hook. I stop and anchor then set out the rods with the bait clicker activated. While in my canoe I may have to jettison the anchors so I have them set up on a quick disconnect jettison system with floats on the end so I can come back and get them later. I have brought twenty pound catfish into the canoe but if any larger I release them while they are still in the water. A fifty pound cat hitting your line and you may swear a twelve foot alligator is on the other end of the line.

Thanks guys I think I will check out the Shakespere Sturdy stick Rod and maybe even do the baitcast route.

Wow, a 20 pound cat in a canoe is awesome!!! :shock: I bet it really felt like you just hooked into a submarine. I hae a 17 foot canoe and I may try my hand at that also.
