converting wheel steer to tiller steer

trying to make tiller steer outta 1981 bass trackerII. Question #1...can the 1981 40 hp merc be converted to a tiller steer? Question #2..if i have to get another motor, what determines if i get short shaft or long shaft? thanks

short shaft and long shaft depends on transom height. 15 inch transom=short shaft 20 inch transom=long shaft
measure the height in the middle(keel line) from the top to bottom to get your height. you may find its 16 inches wich is a short shaft. you may find 22 inches wich is long shaft

go to marineengines.com look in parts for your yr and model and there will be an accessories link, your conversion kit will be in there if it can be converted wich im sure it can be.
