Picked up an early 60's Evinrude 6 horse. It was pumping water okay when we test fired it before I bought it. Questions of the moment are: (a) Can I use any good 2 cycle oil in this old motor? (b) What's the correct mix ratio? And (c) Do I need to add a lead additive to the mix?

Thanks guys.

what year exactly? they changed it to 50-1 in 1965.

I have a 1965 Johnson 6HP and I run the walmart brand oil in it. I dont use any lead additive. mine does smoke a bit, but then again its 44 years old.

Yes, you can use any brand oil, provided it is TC-W3 rated. If it ain't that, don't use it. I usually use Supertech in my outboards, just because it is what is cheapest, but I also use Pennzoil, if it is on sale, and thereby cheaper.

The technical mix for that is 50:1 if it is 1964 or newer, and 24:1 if it is 1963 or older. However, the 1964 through the mid 1970s small motors (3 - 6 or so) still have bronze sleeve bearings whereas larger motors of that vintage don't, so most outboard gurus (myself included) would run that motor at 40:1, as opposed to 50:1.

No, you do not need a lead additive.

I hope that's written somewhere on the label, TCWhat?

Well, the guy said it was a 1963. Whether he's right or not, I don't know. Is there a means by which I can check? Serial number? And where the heck would I find the serial number? Should I check or just go for the 40:1?

20:1, that's pretty rich stuff.

And thanks for all the help guys.

50:1 = 1/2 quart to 6 gallons. 24:1 = 1 quart to 6 gallons or there abouts , a little more oil than what is needed isn't going to hurt anything , although not enough oil will..

Thanks again folks. Get this #*$*%^+ in the water one of these days and see if it still floats after all my work on it the past few weeks.
