How involved is adding electric start to a pull start tiller steer motor? How does the battery charge? would I have to replace the tiller handle? I'm new to the boating thing, this is my first real project. The 35 hp is a bit tough to pull on, electric would be nice. Are these parts something you could find used?
I know this is a bunch of questions but I don't know who to ask.
thanx Tim

What year is your motor?
Try to find a parts motor and take the parts you need.

its a 1980, seems to be a good sound motor. Are they pretty common? What other motors will parts interchange? My other motor is a 1990 15hp everything looks the same, just smaller. I don't know witch years interchange? where would one find this info?

Lots and lots of years will interchange for what you want to do. Battery can be charged as well but the system only had a 4A peak output at the upper RPM range so best to just bite the bullet and charge the battery at home between outings. You should be capable of looking up the necessary parts and/or looking around for a donor engine.

I think any 18, 20, 25, 30 and 35 in the same vintage will be a good donor motor.. I'm pretty sure they are all the same chassis and block, just carbs and reeds are different.

i have a 80 johnson 25hp that my grandpa installed electric start on and you do not have to change the tiller,(our motors are virtually identical exept for a few things..,lower unit on urs is one peice, urs has through hub exhaust,10 more horses, gear ratio ,etc..) the parts are easy to find used, i see them on ebay almost every day. as for charging the battery the motor calls for 350 CCA's wich i just saw in my service manual a few weeks ago, that bein said my battery(280 CCA) has never needed charging at home, the 5 amps from my alternator keep it charged just fine and im mostly on 5mph no wake lakes and when i check voltage before putting the boat in the garage its always between 12.2 and 12.4 volts. that being said my motor starts on the first try 95% of the time and with my small battery or a bigger one if i had to keep cranking it over because it did not wanna start easy the battery would get drained(or in my case would drain it to low to power the starter) to low i beleive for the 5 amps to keep charged unless you were making couple mile runs at WOT.

P.S. one thing i do like is that i still have the option to pull start it if i do have battery trouble, good peice of mind..
