I'm planning my first fishing trip in my jon, and I'm trying to calculate the amount of fuel I will need.

I'm running a 1994 Evinrude 25 tiller motor on a 14' Crestliner deep V.

Running at about 75% throttle (about 20 MPH) what kind of MPG or GPH do you think I will get? I have NO idea what kind of mileage to expect, so any experience here would be helpful. Not looking for exact numbers, just a general idea, so I can carry plenty of fuel.

I'd rather carrry too much fuel than not enough, that's for sure!

Thanks.

The basic formula is, For every 10 HP you will use 1 gallon per hour at wide open throttle. So your 25HP motor will use about 2.5 gallons per hour at WOT.

I cruise WOT mostly with my 1995 Johnson 25hp and I dont have a calculation for my boat. But i feel comfortable fishing with 3 gallons. I have a 6gal tank and i top it off when I hit 1.5-3gallons depending on what I plan on doing exactly. I always aim to have more than enough. Generally I dont burn 3 gallons in an outing.

Thanks for the replies! I had a long run, so I brought 12 gallons with me, just in case.

I ran 14 miles each way to the fishing grounds, then fished for about 6 hours, then ran back. Almost ALL of it was running wide-open, full WOT. Sorry, it was nice out, and this was my first trip of the year, and I was excited!

Anyway, I ran 36 miles and used 5 gallons of gas. 7 MPG, which is a bit thirsty for a 25. I'm sure if I had backed off on the throttle a little, I would have gotten much better mileage, but it was nice knowing that my tank would take me that far without issues!

Thanks again.

Current, tide, and load play a huge part in fuel burn. I get approximately 8 MPG with my normal fishing load and 5 with my hunting load

I notice load paying more of a role in fuel efficiency than anything. What usualy runs me near a full tank (6 gallons) while hunting only cost me about 3.5 gallons on a recent fishing trip.

Well, I had the boat pretty loaded down with extra gear, gas, oil, tackle, extra anchors and rope, and so on.

So perhaps my mileage will be better if I don't carry so much stuff.

And you would go faster.
