I am finally finishing up my jon boat conversion. I am looking to hook up the Humminbird 100sx that came with the boat. The unit powers up fine and runs its self test fine but the depth reading is always around 5-600 ft.Any suggestions?

I would use at least a 20oz weight at that depth....

Joking aside, you may have a bum transducer. Make sure that the transducer itself is pointing straight down, and wipe it clean. If that doesn't work, I'd say try a new $40 transducer.

Not to sound funny here but are you testing the FF in water? I know with mine it tells me to unplug the transducer when I run a self test out of the water.

Your transducer is likely not parallel top the bottom - try adjusting it or mounting it to a different part of the boat. If it is cockeyed, it will not read correctly

That's the first thing that popped into my mind.

The suggestion to make sure that the transducer is oriented toward the bottom correctly (when in the water) is the second.

Mine will read like that if the water is extremely shallow.....like 2 feet or less.
