I recently purchased a boat which came on a trailer. It is a galvanized trailer, 2007 model, and has been in salt water.

I bought marine lube (red in color) and squeezed a few squeezes into the bearings on each side.

After driving it home, I have noticed that, on one side, black grease is coming out from behind the wheel at the axle and slinging onto the inside of that wheel rim.

Is this due to over doing it on the grease and pushing out the old grease, or do I have a problem?

Thanks

Could be excess grease, but it could also be a blown seal.

Since you probably don't know the maintenance history, and since it was in salt water, and since you have to pull the wheel to check it anyway, it's probably a good idea to just check/replace the bearings, races and seals. I've heard you should never mix grease types too, so that is another reason to just replace everything and know it's done right.

If you've never done it before, there's some great how-to videos on etrailer.com
