I am working on my first tin and I have the supports cut and installed on the front deck and floor. I treated the supports with thompsons water seal but now I need to do the decking. Should I use Cabot spar varnish or minwax urethane? There are so many different products out there but I am on a budget. I do plan on installing carpet.

This was previously under help on sealing the deck on my 82 sea nymph.

I am interested in hearing the responses as well. I am in the process of building my front casting deck.

I have read not to use Thompsons, but some guys have used it. Most suggestions on here as what to use is Spar Urethane. I am in the process of sealing my plywood as we speak and I am using Spar.

If I can figure out to post some pics I will. I believe that I am going to go with the urethane as well. I also need topurchase my plywood. I am going to use 15/32 on the floor and aft section of the boat. I plan on using 3/4 for the front deck. I am not a little guy so I will need the extra support.

It costs a bit more, but I am using marine grade resin on my wood deck. My second choice would be spar urethane. Some of my friends use the thompson's on their wood decks at home and they have to re-coat every year in the hot Florida sun.

I plan on going with the urethane. It is more in my budget and the boat will be under cover when not being used.

Here are a couple of more photos. With this being my 1st project, I am open to suggestions.

I started on the floor and I am currently working on the front deck. I plan on doing the back seat area as well.I will add more pics as I go along. I plan on pushing this boat with a 81 johnson 15hp.

With using the urethane on the deck and floor, is there an issue with the carpet adhesive holding? What is the best kind to use? I plan on buying marine carpet at lowes or bass pro.

Thanks, I picked up from a neighbor of mine that never used it anymore. The boat has set in his boat slip for the past couple of years. It came with a 15 horse johnson that needed a couple of little things but it is running now. I was concerned about the compression at first but she has 110 on each cylinder.

I hope the framing holds up. I have sealed it and everything but after looking at a lot of the other posts, I believe I will use aluminum on my next project. I hope to pick up my decking material and urethane in the next couple of days. It is finally starting to cool off here and this will make it a little easier to work on.

I plan on having access hatches on the front deck and on each side of the seat. I will also have storage in the back of the boat.

Really looks good. I saved your pictures in my "jon boat ideas" folder for the future :)

I am considering resin instead of urethane, any suggestion on what type to use. Lowes and home depot have some but I guess it is polyester resin. Does this really matter or not. It is being used for sealing the plywood decks.
