Hull Identification Number

My 12 foot flat bottom, bought used, was made in the 1960s. There is not a HIN anywhere on it. When I got it registered, the state (Ohio) had a HIN on file. The worker at the said it may be a state generated number, and I should make sure it gets put on the boat.

So, should I etch or stamp it straight onto the hull? Maybe create a small aluminum plate and attach it somehow? Any other ideas?

I would have a plate made and riveted on. You can have plates made at trophy shops or as I did for my trailer I had a local laser engraver make a replacement vin plate.

A plated riveted on is perfectly legal. Seaark does it as well as others. It's a good idea to also engrave it somewhere on the inside. A thief can drill out rivets.

Go to petsmart and get a dog tag with the HIN etched on it, and screw it onto the transom.
