Our trolling motor seems to have developed a mind of its own. For some reason, when I have it in the 1,2,3 or 4 position, when I step on the foot control, it jumps into high (5). If I let off and step back on, it goes back into what ever position I have the dial on (1,2,3 or 4). I seem to think this is only happening when the motor is hot - meaning, after I've run it for a while. It is intermitant and no rhyme or reason that I can figure out. Sometimes it runs perfectly - sometimes it will kick up into high speed for no apparent reason. Sometimes I can hit the lever 2 or 3 times and it will run at high speed, then the next time, it runs at the speed the dial is set on??? Pretty annoying when I'm trying to sneak up on the fishes :(

Anyone had a simialr problem??

Motoguide, 37 lb, foot control, 5 speed (dial control for speed setting) w/ right side foot button to acctivate...

Thanks.

Joe

I keep the electrical connections on my pedal saturated with wd-40, to keep water from corroding the connections. Try using WD-40 on your wheel dial reostat, then turn it rapidly to break-up any corrosion that could be in there, also use it on switch on the pedal, too.

I assume I'll need to take the pedal apart to spray the contacts, right?

Shouldn't need to disassemble the pedal. If your pedal is simular to mine, all you have to do is turn it over. Then, rock the pedal backwards to see the back of the switches.

Okay, I'll check that out next week - the boat is in a garage about 25 miles away, so I don't have easy access to it. Thanks for the help - from all that responded....

It could be the 3 positon switch on the side going bad. One of those is momentary (normal), one is constant and one is the full power bypass.

I thought my MG had screwed up on me this spring until I finally checked that switch. It had somehow gotten tripped over to the bypass setting.
